The Constitution defines our government.

It is the basis of our government. Without the constitution, our governement would bog down and grind to a complete halt with the infighting between the different branches over who is responsible for what.

The Constitution simply defines the power our government has. It defines the roles of executive, legislature, and judiciary.

It's the body of generic laws that governs what other laws we can and cannot pass.

And, as with all legislation, it depends upon who violates it and who enforces it whether it is obeyed or not. Many times, and far too often in recent times, its really only the very wealthy who can afford the attorney needed to 'force' government to act (or stop acting when government violates the law) to allow them the protection of the law.
