Taking thyroid meds when one does not need them may make their thyroid gland become underactive eventually, then they will need to take it for life. Thyroid meds in normal doses does not cause weight loss. What they do is help it so that the person with an underactive thyroid can lose by diet & exercise. If your friend is losing weight with the thyroid meds, then she is taking large doses and risking becoming hypothyroid or even worse having a heart attack.

That is the stupidest thing I have ever heard!! There are 2 types of thyroid meds - they kind for hyper and hypo active thyroids - each having the side effect of weight loss or gain.
Taking someone elses meds is dangerous but this is especially stupid since she is probably not even taking the right one. Take them away, tell her husband or something before she winds up dead......

It could do lots of damage, she definately should not take medication that is not prescribed to her. Number one it could seriously damage your thyroid, she will probably have to be put on the medication for her thyroid problems she created, and once your on it so long depending on the problem you gain weight. Plus you can damage other parts of your body by ingesting medication you don't need.

Death.
If she has a thyroid problem, she should go to her doctor. Tests can be run to determine how much she truly needs. Also, there are two different kinds of thyroid meds: one for high and one for low. For low, Synthroid, most people loose weight on it.

Thyroid medication is not meant to be used a diet aid, even when it is prescribed to a patient for thyroid treatment. Your friend must stop taking her husband's medication, now. It could be dangerous.

Her taking this medication when not needed would be the equivalent of an overdose.
Symptoms of a levothyroxine overdose may include chest pain, nervousness, trouble sleeping, tremor, rapid heartbeat, nausea, headache, fever, sweating, shortness of breath, heat intolerance, irregular menses, increased appetite, decreased weight, diarrhea, and abdominal pain.
Also it may turn off your own thyroid production, temporarily or long term.
