In the days when you had to march for weeks carrying all your
stuff with you and after weeks of marching finally fighting the
opponent in hand to hand combat, young and fit made sense.
But now war is a technological thing, hand to hand combat is a
thing of the past. You get flown in, Catering right behind you , forking out hamburgers and other goodies at base camp.
You drive round in vehicles, infra red telescopes, a.s.o.
The days of the bayonet are over, 'older' people would often do
just as well. But they don't !!, youngsters with their whole life ahead of them die. It seems utterly unfair.
Is it a cultural thing ?. are settled people over a certain age utter cowards
protecting their interest just shedding crocodile tears?.
Happy to chicken out because war is a youngsters job ?.

Wingshooter 08, I meant no disrespect to your son, and I'm not implying there is no hand to hand combat or carrying 100
pd gear around, off course there is!.
I've been in the army myself ( we had a
draft in my country ).For some task you need extremely young fit atletes, but they all seem to be so very young with so
much more to lose as us oldies ( I'm 45 ). Whether a war is necessary justified or whatever is neither here nor there but it is always us elders that make the decision, and it is mostly 18 - 25 year old kids that pay the ultimate price. And that saddens me.

Oh, I actually volunteered to go on peace keeping duty on the Lebanon border to be shot at by Hezbollah idiots.
But I was rejected for my too Gung Ho
attitude because I stated I' d fire back
on anyone who'd empty an AK 47 in my
direction. I'm there to keep the peace and do the job not looking for trouble.
So let me get on with it...
It's us ' oldies in armchairs I worry about'

Tell that to the grunts on the ground right now. All the tech in the world will not take and hold ground. You need boots on the ground for that.

It does not follow that the war mongers are just "old" people. It is the "rich" people that start the wars and you are right. It is the young that fight these wars but not the rich mens kids.

Older people are not as easily conned as the young and dumb, and don't take orders as well either. As a person begins to get a handle on themselves there are some atrocities you cannot get most of them to do personally.

Also even though the fighting may be less mano-a-mano reaction speed is still critical, and for this you also want young-uns

Iraq has more older people killed than is usual for past wars, only WW2 had as big a percentage older people getting killed.

There is a much bigger gap of rich and poor than young and old, and many poor and young are trying to get a start in life by signing up for the military, while those older who would do that already did.

*Mooch runs over the the back corner of the bar and grabs Dusty by the shoulder*

My good friends! Now, now...no need to get violent. Put down the broken bottles and steak knives...he was just stating his opinion here...can't we all just agree to disagree?

*All eyes, bottles, and knives turn towards Mooch*

Umm, never mind....er....anybody for a game of Mumbly Peg?

*A steak knife flies by and imbeds itself in the wall by Mooch's head*

I see. Hmm...

OH LOOK! Free beer!

*Mooch grabs Dusty and runs for the door.*

Man are you screwed up! I am passing on what you just said to my son, cause he needs a good laugh. Oh yeah that son is a Sgt. in Army, Combat Infantry. Tell him that there is no hand to hand and doesn't need to be fit in 130 degree heat carrying 100 lb packs. Tell him that he gets catered meals as in his two years iini country he has been nowhere near a base camp or FOB. He would like to know that he doesn't have to eat MRE's anymore. Tell him he doesn't have to hump everywhere he goes that you are now sending him a vehicle to ride in. Dude get off that kool-aide!

Last time I checked it is a Volunteer Force....so if you do not want to go and fight don't join...

however, if you were one of the unfortunate people who thought it was just a job to earn money for college and now your caught in having to do the duty you signed up for then stop whinning and fulfill the obligation that you took without any reservation or purpose of evasion as you swore

otherwise, shut the hell up... the old people you speak of have done their fair share and some not of their choosing...

whiny biotch

Uh, in case you didn't know, we have an all volunteer military. Yes, there are age and gender restrictions depending on what you want to do. But, when one signs up to join the military (or police force or any other job where your life might be put on the line) it's all voluntary.

What branch are you in?
