What is the function of ozone in the atmosphere?

I cannot find it anywhere, does anyone know what the function of ozone in the atmosphere is, and how it performs that function? Thanks in advance for any help!

Well the ozone u hear about from the weather man is not ozone,it is no2. a fertilizer produced by the high temperature in cars ,but it is produced in nature by lightning. The true ozone is O3 and is very deadly to us. The O3 protects us from the radiation of the sun. O2 is normal for oxygen but in the beginning of space there are an electrical charge generated that holds O3 together. The environmentalist want u to think that CFC was causing the deterring of the O3 but the CFC is far to heavy to get that high in our atmosphere.

The ozone layer acts like a blanket to the earth. The sun's rays penetrate this layer and hit the earth, warming it. Some of the rays bounce back towards space but are not allowed out. These rays warm the air. Some sunlight is reflected right away by the ozone layer and some other light penetrates the ozone layer after it bounces back from earth. All in all, most of the sunlight (in the form of heat) remains in the air and warms it, and warms the earth as well.

The ozone layer is made up of three oxygen molecules thus having the formula O3.It is found above stratosphere.It is a poisonous gas.But it is the saviour of all the organisms in earth.It spreads like a sheet in earth's atmosphere.The sun's rays consists of most of the rays other than the visible part.It specially consists of UV and IR rays.Among them UV [ultra violet rays] is the most harmful one to human skins.It causes skin diseases in contact with human skin.The main function of ozone layer is to filter these UV rays from the sun and so protecting life.Though it is a poisonous gas it helps us to live freely
but the cloroflurocarbon CFC gas from the refrigerators affect the ozone layer which results in several holes in the layer.through this holes they penetrate to earth's surface and cause damage to several life forms.Thus ozone is the saviour of life

phantom is right on most of what he says , The ozone layer also protects harmful rays from entering the earth.
Since the ozone layer is being destroyed by pollution, it doesnt stop these harmful rays from entering the earth, and oxygen is escaping the earth. It also affects global warming .
