We honestly have no real idea.

There are some people who say dark matter, but humanity has no idea what that is.

Then, there are some people who say that it's still being powered from the big bang. Then those people are faced with the Big Rip question and the fact that we really haven't followed a traditional growth/shrinking pattern.

Well, I think I can throw a couple of cents in the direction of this answer. I don't know about dark matter, or the nature of God (although I do believe in Him), nor do I have a degree in astrophysics, but I can share with you the way I see the answer to your question. If you have ever seen an explosion in person or in a film, you may be aware of something called a pressure wave or a shock wave.
Now imagine an explosion that was very, very, very big. The shockwave is what I imagine to be the borders of space. That shockwave will continue to expand until it runs out of energy from the initial explosion. Keeping in mind that this was a very, very, very big explosion, this could take a while. After the energy from the initial explosion is expended, two things may happen: 1) the universe will stagnate and cease to expand or contract or 2) following Newton's laws of motion, the equal and opposite reaction will occur in which the universe will slowly begin to contract, drawing all of its matter back to its center and then condensing it, leading to another singularity (the very, very, very big explosion), starting the process all over again. These ideas of mine may not be perfect or backed up with heavy- duty scientific data, but this idea works for me. Hope this helps.

For now, is called Dark Energy or Dark Matter. Do we know what it is? Not a clue. We still know nothing. Is it infinite? We don’t know, but probably not as I am sure there is not such a thing as “infinite”. Will it keep on expanding forever? We also don’t know.

What we know is what we see, and we are very blind as we all know. And I do know also that the day we discover the source of that power or “Dark Matter”, we will probably be able to answer many more questions about the origins and the destiny of this universe. And hopefully the “brainiac” who discovers it will be safe and the FBI or CIA will not hunt him/her down… lol

The universe is a finite entity so it cannot expand forever.
Space is a quantum entity so it cannot expand, the pressure of space diminishes causing it to expand but a quantum unit of space cannot expand itself.
The first space-time pulse that initiated the universe was of minimum size and duration they cannot expand or be divided.
At one time the universe did not exist and sometime in the future it will cease to exist..

The negative pressure of dark energy causes the expansion of space (general relativity). As such the energy density of dark energy increases with the expansion of space. Space will thus not only expand but expand at an ever-increasing rate. We don't know the nature of this dark energy, it is one the most important and unresolved questions in physics.

--The infinite power source is God who not only makes the celestial bodies but maintains them.
--PLEASE NOTE the Biblical reference and the secular:

(Isaiah 40:25-26) 25 “But to whom can YOU people liken me so that I should be made his equal?” says the Holy One. 26 “Raise YOUR eyes high up and see. Who has created these things? It is the One who is bringing forth the army of them even by number, all of whom he calls even by name. Due to the abundance of dynamic energy, he also being vigorous in power, not one [of them] is missing.

--OF INTEREST is that expression of Jehovah God being the sourse of "abundance of dynamic energy" is corroborated 2500 years after Isaiah wrote under inspiration , by Einsteins E=mc2.

--Energy is used in so many specific ways to make --matter & control it that there indeed has to be somone with personality in control.

To many reasoning minds, the explanation simply has to be something more than mere coincidence. John Polkinghorne, formerly a physicist at Cambridge University, concluded: “When you realize that the laws of nature must be incredibly finely tuned to produce the universe we see, that conspires to plant the idea that the universe did not just happen, but that there must be a purpose behind it.”

Australian physicist Paul Davies made a similar point: “There is no doubt that many scientists are . . . scornful of the notion that there might exist a God, or even an impersonal creative principle.” He added: “Personally I do not share their scorn. . . . I cannot believe that our existence in this universe is a mere quirk of fate, . . . an incidental blip in the great cosmic drama.”

Aerospace engineer Luther D. Sutherland wrote in his book Darwin’s Enigma: “The scientific evidence shows that whenever any basically different type of life first appeared on Earth, all the way from single-celled protozoa to man, it was complete and its organs and structures were complete and fully functional. The inescapable deduction to be drawn from this fact is that there was some sort of pre-existing intelligence before life first appeared on Earth.”

Many scientists unhesitatingly declare their belief in a Creator. Although some have broad and vague ideas about who God is, they still agree that the evidence points to an intelligent Designer. Note the following comments:

“As a scientist, I look at the world around me, and observe engineering mechanisms of such remarkable complexity that I am drawn to the conclusion of intelligent design being behind such complex order.”—ANDREW MCINTOSH, MATHEMATICIAN, WALES, UNITED KINGDOM

“The complexity of nature clearly points to a Creator. Every biological and physical system, once understood, shows incredible complexity.”—JOHN K. G. KRAMER, BIOCHEMIST, CANADA

“The order of the living world is plainly evident. It was set up by a superior Power that I personally call God. It is here that faith agrees with scientific truth. Far from contradicting it, it completes it, providing a simpler understanding of our universe.”—JEAN DORST, BIOLOGIST, FRANCE

“I cannot imagine the universe and human life without an intelligent beginning, without a source of spiritual ‘warmth’ that lies beyond matter and its laws.”—ANDREY DMITRIYEVICH SAKHAROV, NUCLEAR PHYSICIST, RUSSIA

“Each animal is in some way uniquely designed to suit its particular environment, and I cannot help but attribute the complexity of the design to a Creator, rather than to random evolutionary forces.”—BOB HOSKEN, BIOCHEMIST, AUSTRALIA

a body in motion will remain in motion until acted upon by an external force.

youd need no powersource to keep things moving away from eachother. provided they are outside the range of their gravity wells.
