A combination of the two: it depends *which* degree you get from *which* school. A smaller or lesser known school that offers a special program of study can be just as good as doing nothing particularly special at a very good school. It depends what you want to do with it (work or grad school).

A degree will help you. A degree from a good university will open doors that may not have been open. A degree from a great university will open even more doors.
I'm not sure that a Harvard degree does all that much more for you than a degree from Berkeley, Michigan, UNC or Virginia -- but it could give you a slight advantage over those schools. But any of those schools give you a huge advantage over someone graduating from a CSU school or Kent State or Slippery Rock.
You can still get a good education from schools like those -- but you have to work harder to convince someone that you have a great education -- simply because there are lots of people with degrees from your school that skated through.

In the 21st century its getting more important to get a higher education. Although the traditional colleges are best and carry great reputations for what you may want to study for...But online degrees get the job done and if you work or have kids, it might be the easiest way. A lot of employers just want to see that you have your B.S or your M.S sometimes it might not even matter in what major more less what institution you got it from.

Both - It depends what Degree you are doing. If you are looking at medicine / something like dentistry etc, it doesn't matter where you go, you'll still be a doctor at the end of your course. {as long as the school is registered}. However if you are doing a degree like Psychology, where competition for jobs is high, it's probably advisable to choose your Uni wisely.
