A graphics card is a sheet of fiberboard with a processor, RAM memory and other components on it. It takes the data from the software you are running, especially 3D games, and translates it into information your monitor can use to create images on its screen. All computers, video game consoles and even some cell phones have them. Some are built into the motherboard so they are hard to see. Others snap into an AGP, PCI or PCI express slot on the motherboard. If someone has told you to upgrade your video card, they mean to replace your current card with a better one. Video card technology improves all the time. Each new model of card is capable of ever more realistic images. Each new generation of games has more complex data for more realistic images. Three-dimentional games drive the demand for better cards as they raise the requirements of processing speed, number of graphics calculations (such as specular lighting and pixel shading), onboard RAM, etc. Before you buy a new card, check the manuals and websites of the makers of your computer and its motherboard for what videocard types it is compatible with. Not all cards will work on all computers. Also read reviews on the kinds that your computer can use from unbiased sources like Consumer Reports, Maximum PC, etc. All card makers say their newest card is the best out there so dont belive the hype.

A graphics card manages monitor output on the monitor's cartesian plane. For the most part, it's just manipulating and coloring rectangular regions, but in games the graphics card features its own processor (GPU) and performs a significant amount of 3d calculations.
