The city where she died, and where her death certificate was issued, should have on file in the Probate Court whom the executor of her will was.
If it is NYC, be specific with the borough and the office you talk with, making sure it is the place which issued her death certificate. You can try to get this from the medical examiner or funeral home, as well.
If it is the state of New Jersey, get the information in the same fashion if she passed in New Jersey, and it may be easier, as there is less red tape in New Jersey offices (less population). Get the date of death and go from there. It will take some investigating, keep notes as to the information you have collected, where you have called, and cite the answers and directions given you. Remember to ask for names, telephone numbers with extensions, for the city offices. Good luck

Here in Florida and I am sure other states have the same type of websites because my husband can find just about anybody anywhere.
Here he uses The Clerk of Court records, he said in N.Carolina it's called Register of Deeds. And since New Jersey is one of the 13 orginal colonies, my husband said it might be set up differently than down here.
If you do find such a website, he said to look and see if were any legal deeds or transactions in your landlord's name.
I hope this helps. Good luck.

Start by going to the county court house where the landlord resided, and go to the probate office. If there was a will or if the estate was probated, there would be a record. It might be called orphan's court or probate office, depending on the jurisdiction, but it is part of the court system.
My second thought is trying where she worked to see if anyone remembers her and perhaps can put you in touch with any of her relatives. They might be able to tell you the name of the attorney who handled her estate.

Call the probate court. They handle estates, etc. They can get you the name of the executor.
