that you will have an easier time nursing? I was unable to nurse my first child due to lack of milk/colostum, and she had a high pallet and she was not latching on right. I never leaked during pregnancy, and this time around, everyone I know that is about as far along as me is leaking, and once again, I'm not. I'm almost 30 weeks

Leaking (or not) during pregnancy has nothing at all to do with the ability to breastfeed. Some women leak, so don't. Both is normal and either mom can nurse just fine.

Get in contact with La Leche League so you can build up a support network now for after the birth.

Be sure to see the Lactation Consultant when you are in the hospital to make sure baby is latching on correctly.

I never did leak anything and nursed 3 babies successfully (the last one for 15 months) I'm sorry you had a bad experience with your first, but every baby is different. My first 2 latched on immediately, my last took almost 4 days to get the hang of it (and obviously had no problem after that since she wouldn't give it up!) The best advice I got was don't give up and don't supplement, the baby will get it. Also, the one thing no one ever tells you (although you may know from your first experience) it will most likely be painful at first. hang in there, it gets better and it's soooo worth it!

It's not that uncommon for you not to leak colostrum. Also depends on how far along you are. The best thing I can tell you is, it doesn't really matter if you don't produce enough milk. Many women have to breastfeed and also supplement w/formula. Of course I always recommend talking to a lactation consultant. They will defiantly be able to answer any questions you have about breastfeeding. I would also talk to your doctor, I believe that there are some medications that can actually help you to start producing milk. No matter what, whatever you give you baby will definitely give the best head start. Good luck.

That is all hogwash. Many women don't ever leak, they don't produce moe than a few drops until after birth. All too often, nurses are quick to tell a mom that she can't nurse because they themselves feel guilty about not having nursed their own children. You can and should nurse. If you and your new baby have trouble, keep at it, you will get the hang of it. Talk with the people at the La Leche League (aka the Nursing Nazis...lol) they are really good at helping a mom get going. There is a nice setup at breastfeeding.com that has advice and even videos. Leaking early is sometimes a contributing factor to early labor and doesn't mean much of anything. Talk to your doctor and the Lactation Nurse/Consultant at the hospital, the Public Health Nurses at the WIC office are a big help too.

I leaked most of my pregnancy, but nursing did not come easily. My friend, who gave birth a month after me, never leaked and had more milk then she knew what to do with.
I believe it depends on the baby and the comfort of the mom.

I don't think it has anything to do with the ease of nursing. I leaked from 18 weeks on last time. My girls never really caught on to nursing (preemies, although we tried our best for 3 months). My best friend never leaked a single drop before delivery. Her daughter is still nursing at almost 2 yrs old. Best of luck.

I went through 3 pregnancies and breast fed all 3 children for almost a year and did not leak anything in any of my pregnancies. The key to breast feeding is persistance and the more often you feed your baby the more milk your body will produce. Just give it your very best shot for both you and baby. Be blessed.

I leaked with my first and didnt with my second...but I had a much better supply and easier time nursing my second son than my first...so I would say leaking has nothing to do with milk supply before you actually deliver

Yes, you will. Latch on is better obtained when Mom can express a bit of colostrum soon after birth as this provides more instant gratification for your baby. It lets Baby know quickly that something is there and worth latching on for. Best of luck to you.
