The rioting is being carried out by Moroccan and Arab immigrants, and the children of immigrants; in other words, Muslims. Many of these "youths" that you read about may be French born, but their culture is not French. And many of them are not French at all. They routinely burn about 100 cars every night, not just after elections. They take any opportunity to riot. This is an ongoing problem, and French citizens, tolerant though they are, are getting tired of it. That is why they voted for a change.

Would you judge American people based on what a few hundred of them (say, the KKK) do?
Keep in mind that media, by focusing on an event, act as a lense that cannot provide a comprehensive and global view on what is going on.
For example, based on TV news, people thought that the whole US was under fire during the Los Angeles riots, and someone could have wondered, as you do today, whether Americans were inherently thuggish.
