Um, because maybe the tales of the past were just that...tales. Most of the bible was written centuries after the events described within it, and some passages (for instance things Jesus did while alone) could not possibly have had anyone there first-hand to begin with. In an age when very few people knew how to read or write and story-telling was one of the only forms of entertainment in existence, it is all but inevitable that historical occurrences become richly embellished with the mythology of the time, and fundamentally altered from what actually happened.

Although probably rather insulting to believers, I think Carl Sagan's assessment of the bible as "half fairy-tale, half barbarian history" is perhaps the most accurate.

God of the Old Testament supported (and helped fight) wars, genocide, mass murder, and animal sacrifices. He condoned polygomy and/or incest (Solomon, David, Lot). He tortured for amusement (Job, Abraham) and killed the innocent first born of an entire nation just to make a point to one man. He personally identified a "chosen people" over others, and wiped out humanity and the world's animal population because he was displeased, despite his claims of that he allows self-determination. He created ten commandments that are sexist, condone slavery, and in the case of one commandment, announce a plan to carry a grudge against several generations if it is broken.

Frankly, with that kind of God's help, I'd rather do without.

Like he did in the past?....you mean when 6 million of his Chosen People were incinerated, or maybe the distant past when millions died from the Black Plague or witch-hunting inquisitions? Or maybe you're referring to the genocide of us Native Americans from the past 200 years, where was this god?

Did God help anyone in the past? Who saw it, or who being helped still alive to proof it? God, even if exist, never help anyone of us, it's the helpful human whose will help you when you are in need.

God, according to the Bible, does not change. He is the same yesterday, today and forever. However, His power is often concealed from the eyes of unbelievers and often works in response to the faith of man. In the Bible there is a question as to whether God will be able to find faith on the earth in the last days.

He certainly does not appear the way he did during biblical times, like when talking to Moses and Abraham etc...

How do you know he helped in the past or that he doesn't help presently? There's no way to know for certain, either way.

Hosea 4:6 My people perish for a lack of knowledge.... We don't want God anymore, so he will not force himself on you. Seek and you will find.

Someone didnt' pay attention in Sunday School...
When God kicked Lucifer out of heaven, He said that if he wants to rule something, he can go "rule" earth. "Rule" is defined (please don't make me do it again, it's been years) as COMPLETE control. This "complete" control means God is "hands-off" (as compared to Sodom and Gomorrah) until His second coming.
