Formatting is no harder on a hard drive then is normal use. You are simply removing and rebuilding the memory map. If on the other hand you are using a "scrubber" that writes X's and O'x across the entire hard drive many times over, then that can be a little hard on the drive. But you would have to do this act many many times to do any damage. Always remember that a hard drive is a mechanical device that is spinning very fast. The more it is used the more it wares on it's bearings.
