Particle accelerators have given us keen insights into the origin of our universe, and may very well help us solve other mysteries. There have been numerous technological spinoffs. I remember looking up collider experiment results published by Harvard back in the mid 1990s over the internet.

That isn't to say that the internet was developed exclusively to share collider experiment results, but high energy physics has lots of real world applications.

We need big science. NASA is not science. It has degenerated into a political slogan ("We will return to the moon in 2020.; We will place a man on Mars.") That is not science, it is engineering. The discovery of new particles which have not been seen since the big bang can help us understand how the Universe works. In regards to the LHC,

"When switched on, it is hoped that the collider will produce the elusive Higgs boson particle — often dubbed the God Particle — the observation of which could explain how other elementary particles gain mass and fill in the gap in the Standard Model theory."

I agree in that there is no way to predict what advances could come from advancing our scientific knowledge. LHC has the very real potential to discover what dark matter truly is. Incidentally if it wasn't for particle accelerators there wouldn't be any internet, it was developed by particle accelerator scientists to share data so be thankful that there is cutting edge science being done.

It is basic science on a big scale. Past advances in basic science have enabled all modern technology. No telling what future technology might result from what we learn from the LHC. The value could easily be trillions $$$, in a hundred years.

i'm excited and imagine the LHC is stunning. imagine even as they locate a clean length by making use of that project. Einstein ought to have crapped his pants if he were given his fingers on it.
