Ionic conpounds are formed by elements with very different electronegativity. Elements from the firs two grups (those on the first two colums on the left) can make ionic compounds with alogens (the second colum from the right) because the first have a very low electronegativity (they tend to lose their valence shell electrons and so to become positive ion) and the secons have a very hight electronegativity (tend to keep new electrons to complete their valence shell with eight electrons in it and so to become negative ion).

Positive ions group called Alcalis Na, K...give monovalent positve ions
and group II Be, Mg give divalent positive ions

Negative ions Halogens F, Cl, Br,I give monovalent negative ions
and groups of oxygen family O, S, Se , Te give divalent negative ions
