You probably need to install the drivers for your wireless adapter. If that really is the problem, then checking ipconfig at this stage would not be useful.

If you had to reinstall everything, chances are the drivers and stuff that run your wireless card are lost and the computer isn't recognizing the hardware properly. Get the CD that came along with your wireless card and reinstall it on the computer.
If this still doesn't work, perhaps you have security on your router and you'll need the passphrase which you can get by accessing your router settings. Also, go to the properties on your wireless connection, then select Internet Protocol TCP-IP and make sure "Obtain IP address automatically" is selected. But I think it is by default.
If I think of more stuff I'll edit. :)

This has happen to me. If it is linksys wireless router.
Reinstall the disk for your wirless internet then,
Try unhooking the internet modem , and then the linksys modem, wait about 1 minute and the hook up the internet modem when that is finished the plug in the linksys modem and then try it.
Sometimes you have to reset the linksys to get the ip address. IF this does not work call your internet provider and they will give it to you to enter manually or if free support they will get you going again. I have a cable internet modem.
however if this simple way does not work follow Ranger 58 and DJ's it is the best.
Good luck and best wishes

Take the advice of Ranger 58 although i would also after typing in ipconfig follow this with a space and type all and press enter. This will give you the ip address, default gateway and the subnet mask . It will also tell you if your packages are being sent and received.

Sounds like your wireless card is not connecting to your wireless router. Some wireless cards have their own software for finding and configuring networks; some will use windows network options. I think you need to set up your wireless connection with the right encryption/pass phrase, etc. Go to Start>Control Panel>Network Connections and right-click on your wireless connection. Choose WPA for your encryption (if your wireless router is set for WEP, you should change the router to WPA and then set up your computer) and enter your passphrase. If this is all geek to you, ask again. Hope this helps...

You will need to reset you wireless connection. If you don't see it in the task bar (lower right side) you will need to get to it from network connections (control panel) Once you see your wireless connector double click to set it up with your system. It should allow you to view all available networks, select yours, click connect and you should be good to go.
Now if your reload of XP did not reload the wireless driver for your card you will need to re-install that driver also.

I am no expert in these matters, but I hope this will help:
Right click on your active connection and select 'Repair'. If your Windows manages to repair the connection, then your computer should easily acquire an IP address. However, if it fails to repair, then contact your ISP.

You probably need to re-install the wireless card drivers and software. Check also in device manager if any other items are marked yellow, they may also need re-loading.
