People feel helpless... thus far no alternative for the gas vehicle has been put into the mainstream, so that the average Joe can afford to change over. Even hybrids must use gas.

So even if the people demand change from oil & gas and complain about the outrageous prices, and the news has reflected this issue and even some politicians have voiced their concern & try to champion the task to investigate the oil & gas companies monopolizing/manipulating the markets, as the saying goes..."they've got us over a (GAS) barrel" & they know it! And they are going to squeeze every drop out of us before they're forced to call it quits with the very natural resources that are to blame for our serious climate situation we are in and will continue to be in until someone gets smart & realizes the early bird gets the worm! In other words, who ever cashes in & has control on the newest reliable energy source that doesn't pollute or cause irreparable damage to our planet will be rich, rich, rich indeed!!! While the rest of us continue to pay high prices for something we can't live without.

Because the use of automobiles has become so interwoven in our social structure, that an auto is no longer considered to be a luxury, it is now thought to be a necessity.

People have to travel so far to get to work and feed themselves today that they have to own one. There isn't enough mass transit to cover the amount of travel people have to do to work.

We could all boycott working for 2 weeks and then you would see a miracle happen........ gas prices would suddenly drop.

A few key questions which specifically concern me regarding the price of gasoline. What are my transportation choices in my city/town?. Does my job and activity level require independent transportation.? What about my immediate family and their needs? Next, what's the big economic picture regarding oil? What other countries use oil besides the US? And is their use growing? ( Yes, China, India, Europe, Central and South America, Japan, even Russia) At what economic breakeven point (price of oil/gasoline) will I consider a bike, a scooter, electric car, atomic energy? How do I personally conserve energy? Do I own shares of stocks or mutual funds which benefit from energy companies? Do I benefit from their share appreciation and/or dividends. In other words do I really understand the problem and what am I willing to do irrespective of my neighbor? And in the bigger picture is the US playing a smaller role in energy demand and production of energy? What can I really change regarding gasoline prices other than me and my outlook?

Here is your answer. People just put up with it because they are lazy and content. If you were President would you do something about this if 10 or 50 million people decided to act out in some meaningful and non-violent way. Perhaps - participate in a national program of honking our horns. Every day at Noon we get into our cars and honk our horns for ten minutes. Extra points for honking in your representatives parking lot at his office. Or, every day we stop on the roads and highways for 45 minutes. Shut down the highways and roads. Anything to protest this madness and compell the government to put in price controls and seize excessive profits and refund the money to the taxpayers.

ask about where "OUR" oil is going, and what about the strategic reserves? In the mid west, the average "to and from work mileage" is approx. 40 miles, and the average 10 to 15 year old vehicle gets approx 15 to 22 mpg. This all averages out to about $200.00 a month in gas just to go to work with gas at $3.20 a gal. that's $2400.00 a year. on a $30000.00 per year income,$20400.00 after taxes, leaves $18000.00 to live on, Can anyone live comfortably on $18000.00 in America anymore?????

do we really have a choice?
sure, there are electric cars.
but can someone on an average income really afford an electric car?
those are expensive.
yeah, we can protest.
but how far do you think that will get us?
NOT VERY FAR.
the economy sucks.
people are losing the ability to pay for gas and the things they need.
but there's not much we can do about it.
except wail until 2008 and hope the the new president knows how to fix all of this.

Because well (1) you have a life and there is no way that you are going to get ppl to go on ur boycotting adventure (2) If you have kids, they arent going to pick up themselves, the groceries arent going to walk home, and well your bills cant get paid. I highly doubt that the government is going to listen to your problems when they have to put up with the same... So get over it and go buy ur gas....

Because in the US it's still only a third of the price that it is in the rest of the world.

B/c we really don't have a choice. What's the alternative? Walking 20 miles to work everyday? It sucks but what can you do? Only drive when necessary!

Townieman, because most of "the people" no longer have a will of their own; they simply function under directives! It is a robotic society. No, this is not Science Fiction! Please see: Human or Robot? - http://www.geocities.com/ulafrique/nanotechnology.html
