I inherited what I think is a yukka plant many years ago. Since moving house it is flourishing and getting new leaves all the time. Unfortunately it is now a tad bald at the bottom. I know that leaves only grow at the top but can anything be done to improve the look of the bottom part of the stem?

That is what the yucca plant does. Only the top portion has the growing leaves. If the lower stem bothers you, plant some kind of other plant to cover it up. The flowers are sooo beautiful, you will love them.
The yucca is the state flower of New Mexico.

Plant a smaller yukka or yucca in with the other one to give the look of more foliage at the bottom of the stem.

Yuccas respond well to being cut down to about a foot, from which new shoot will appear. With luck the top foot with the leaves will also root if stuck in a rich compost. Throw the rest away.

you have to be tough here ... cut it off at bout an inch or so above ground level ... this will automatically make the plant start to produce new shoots
