Think there can only be one answer as all the stuff you guys are talking about would never have even happened if this hadn't come first - soooo the killer app of all time has to be the first Graphical User Interface (GUI). Wikipedia lists an interesting path to GUI but for me the first that was actually used to any considerable extent were the early Mac OSs. Without the GUI we would not have had any of the apps we so rely on today and that includes photoshop, the modern web browser, the lot!!!

You have to understand that there are more business users than home and entertainment users. Large Fortune xxxx companies are the bread and butter of the PC busines. So that said the real killer application is the spread sheet which legitimized the computer in business. There were word processors long before the PC was invented and any good graphic artist could create presentations but spread sheets were the application that really took advantage of the PC's power. Prior to that accountants had to hand calculate spread sheets that were paper and pencil. The spread sheet allowed 'what if' kind of thinking without the drudgery of hand re-calculating. And later when they added advanced formula functions it became a scientists dream machine.
The first spread sheet was Visicalc and ran on Apple II in 1979 5 years before the PC.
I realize that this is before your 20 years but spread sheets are probably still the most used app for any PC or Mac.

The web-browser.

I think Mosaic was the first to gain general use. Wikipedia cites it as the killer app of the 90's but even today internet access remains a predomant reason why poeple use and buy computers.

Web browsers revolutionised the internet, and it was only then that it gained the acceptance it has today. Windows 95 saw the webbrowser become part of the popular operating system of the day to the extent that it was even incorporated in the GUI.

And with the possible exception of email web-browsing would seem to be the mosty common use of the internet still today.
