Excellent question, however, you will need to give us a little more detail in order for us to help you.
- Do you already have a dial-up or cable internet connection?
- What devices and peripherals (printers, scanners, etc) do you have?
- What kind of Operating Systems do you have? Any Mac/Linux in your mix or are you a pure Windows environment?
-Do you have a pre-wired ethernet cable in your apartment/home/condo/etc?
-Did you already but a router (wireless or non-wireless)
-If you purchased a wireless, make sure you enable WEP or some encryption...

Stick to major brands when buying devices, like Linksys, Netgear for routers.

Good luck.

Step by step is out, as theres quiet a lot of steps, plus they depend on what setup you have already.

This is just an example, with a router, you can share internet between many computers, once the computers are started up, they will already be part of the network, by using the router as a connection (gateway) point, so in this simple example, you are ready to share files already.
