Prior to commencement of WWorld Cup2007,Pakistan and Indian Team were considered to be strong contenders for the world cup.
They were placed in Group D along with West Indies, Zimbawe and Ireland. Their first match in the world cup was against West Indies on March 13, 2007. Pakistan won the toss and elected to field. West Indies scored 241 runs for the loss of 9 wickets in 50 overs. However, Pakistan could score only 187 runs and they were all out in 47.2overs and lost the match to West Indies by 54 runs.
Their next match was against Ireland, who were the debutant team in the world cup and Pakistan had to win the match so as to qualify for Super 8 stage. However, they were defeated by Ireland, in what can be considered as a major upset in the history of world cup. Ireland won the tossand put Pakistan to bat. Pakistan could score only 132 runs and were all out in 45.4 overs. Ireland scored 133for the loss of 7 wickets in 41.4 overs and won the match.
Though Pakistan won their match against Zimbawe, they were knocked out from the world cup as they had only 2 points as compared to 3 Points Ireland had by virtue of their defeating Pakistan and making their match against Zimbawe a Tie.
