Have been emailing and instant messaging some individuals for quite sometime but they will not give any proof or evidence that they are real. Would like to know if it is possible to find out if they are real or not. They will not meet in person either.

I have been talking to someone online for about six months and they give many excuses as to why they won't meet or even give a phone number or address, I have given them mine. I guess I can't understand why someone would spend that much time chatting online without ever making theirselves real to you. I guess I am just a sucker learning the hard way about the internet.

Ok...if by "quite sometime" you mean months and they still won't even allow you to call them, they are either extremely mistrusting, or have something to hide...such as they aren't ACTUALLY the sex they claim to be, or are married...or have 6 kids. If by "quite sometime" you mean weeks, give them some time...maybe they are afraid of YOU...

And, keep in mind, phone calls don't verify they are telling the truth about anything. I once talked for weeks to a guy that claimed to be a department head of some huge internet company in NYC...when what he was saying started to not add up, I called that company...they'd never heard of him...and sure enough, he was lying....

ALSO keep in mind that the great thing about the internet, and esp. internet chat rooms is that it allows people to escape from reality. Online you can be anyone, so why would you be a married woman with four kids and a husband that's barely around if you didn't have to be? And, from experience, anyone that's happy and fulfilled doesn't spend hours online talking to other "imaginary" people. When I was going through my divorce, I spent a lot of time in excite chat...and I wasn't a woman going through a divorce, let me clue you. My life was my reality...online was my escape....

If after 6 months of chatting, and you feel you've really connected, I'd bet money that somethings not kosher with what they've been telling you. Esp. if you've had "in depth", revealing conversations, and you feel as though you've gone as far as you can on-line and they're not willing to make the next step. People spend time in chat for two reasons...to meet people, or to escape their reality. If they don't want to meet, they are there for the other reason.

Many poeple online are reluctant to meet offline whether they're the real mckoy or not.

Ofcourse they are "real"(you don't think its robot, I assume), but you want to know if they're "for real"? This is just a hi-tech way of asking if we think they're play'n you. And you'd need to look for the same signs eg is their story straight. And just as in the lo-tech world of real life you could try to do some snooping eg this could be as simple as googling their handle/name to see if they've also got a page on myspace, etc. In the end the only person who can answer this though is you. And if you're having doubts then you've got to decide if it's worth continuing with this person.

If they want to sell you something or get you to send them money by Western Union, or if they want to show you a way to get rich quick, then they are 'not real'.

If they just hang out at a chat room then wanting to stay private doesnt mean anything - in fact because they refuse to meet up I would say that makes them more likely to be real.

well, if they don't give you that info, they are really smart real people. and if they don't want to meet in person, so be it. for all they know, you could be a crazed stalker. would you give people you address and phone number if you met them on-line? maby they just want to keep it on the Internet. nothing wrong with that. i seriously doubt a bot could hold a conversation with anybody, so yes, they are very real.
