OK I know people say we need to leave and others say we need to stay and never the 2 will agree but looking to see if we can find a real middle ground answer that might work.
Any ideas on how we can actually fix this whole situation since staying there until the end of time won't work and leaving this second probably won't? Something that both sides could agree on?

lltrix> good point and I agree should not have been there. But we ARE there so whatever is gonna happen to put things back together WILL involve USA..to think otherwise is kinda naive.

I think that both the President's call for an undefined stay and the Democrats' call for benchmarks are both doomed to failure.
The problem with the Democratic plan, as I understand it, is it forces the Iraqi government to live up to benchmarks or we leave. It should be the opposite. If the Iraqi people want us to leave, then they should be able to demonstrate to us that they can live in some sort of orderly society.
This is what I propose:
1. For each number of days without a terrorist attack, (its an arbitrary number...let's say 30 for the sake of argument), the US forces pull back to positions that would gradually take us out of Iraq. Hypothetically speaking, let's say it would take 10 consecutive periods to get us in positions outside of Iraq (Qatar, Bahrain, etc).
2 If there is an attack within this specified number of days, we advance our forces to the previous position.
This would not punish the Iraqi government if they failed in their security duties, but would provide an incentive for Iraqis to work together. Opponents might say that this would just give time for insurgents to arm and train, but it would also give Iraqi forces time to arm and train as well.

dude...the answer in iraq is actually simple, but it will need an additional troop surge to make it over 400000 troops there...because what needs to happen are to close the borders completely...we make our own border stops, and control the entire line between iraq and syria and iraq and iran...
then from there, we treat every city as we did in our outstanding success on falluja...we map each city out and sweep through it...
a no arms treaty amongst all the country....so if you are an arab and you have a gun, and you arent part of the police or security forces, you are considered an enemy...
its time consuming and costly, but at this point we cant keep putting bandaids all over the place out there...we need to do some serious house cleaning...

If politicians and war generals, and strategist cant even figure out an Iraq solution then none of average joe Americans can. I mean us Americans ONLY get to hear and see what the media shows us about Iraq. The politicians and the rest of them are the ONLY ones that REALLY know whats going in Iraq. There could be things they are not telling us Americans.

As you said you should not be there on first place .....but now when you are there..so firstly, make up your mind that You have to leave that place.....becuase as this issue is hot that US is there for "Oil" and untill and unless you keep benefit in your mind, you would not make a proper strategy.....Now once you pull out your interest from that place.....then 'sincerly" let the people of that place to tackle that situation ..Announce clearly that you have no interest left there and give them a proper date and they tell them that they should resolve all their issues till that time and you would (if you like) assist them and help them in that..becuase i m feeling as long as US would be playing politics there, that place would not be in peace so firstly US has to keep its hands off that place...Then if they could manage to get through it..well and Good and if not, then too you just pull out your troops from there.becuase it would not be wise to stay there for any longer when you are of no help to them..or they don't want to help themselves..Or better get UNO to tackle that all beucase US would always be taken as "invaders" and they would never embrace you as helper, liberator or whatever US governament claims to ..so no use of wasting your troops and money there..Go back to home and live in peace and let UN handle that on its own...becuase these problems would never be solved untill US troops are working there..they would keep on fighting and killing each other plus your troops and you troops would keep on killing them ..so once there is no peace..there is "no" solution !well telling you US and Iraqi people can never agree on something...You just think of yourself.would you ever compromise someone who would invade you for some political reasons and is not kind to you actualy? Never...so only solution is that US should keep its way and let them decide their way !

Sorry Shaz, but to think that we can fix Iraq is the first mistake. You have to remember that this country is steeped in ancient tribalism and 2 versions of Islam; the Sunni and the Shiite. If you think AMERICA can fix that, then you have a bit of arrogance going on. No offence, but this is something America has no business being involved in and cannot fix. Unfortunately, Bush's actions have created more and more problems, not less.

1. Loudly announce a US pull out from Iraq
2. Begin shifting US troops to embarcation points
3. Behind the scenes force Iraqi government to LOUDLY request a continued US presence through "advisors"
4. LOUDLY declare the legitimacy of the Iraqi government
5. Accept an "advisor" role
6. Assign advisors to operate in conjunction with Iraqi troop groupings
7. Force Iraq to LOUDLY request UN aid and military assistance
8. Provide financial assistance and humanitarian aid while promoting a UN and Iraqi military image

Get a sniper rifle and aim for Bush. Or take hostage the General of the American Army. LoL :)
Nah just kidding. The only actual thing you can do is dig deep and see what's the real reason behind this and then expose it to public and don't let go until people get what they deserve.

i'll be honest...i don't know what to do but as an air force wife i am alil tired of the war and everything i have had friends get killed and friends that have been there for over a year and my husband goes in just a few months and personally i wish we could come to some kind of agreement where we leave them alone and bring our troops home and they don't try to blow up the U.S. when we do.....

we need to leave. however, every one knows that we will never pull out all of our troops now that we have a foot in the country. The important thing to these people is for them to feel that we are not "occupying" their country. We can leave some troops their for support.
