I'm a first time mom also.
Our pediatrician told us that once she could turn from belly to back, back to belly, and pull to standing she could sleep in whatever position she wanted, and we could use a blanket with her, *IF* we could hold it tightly to our faces and still breathe through it ourselves. We ended up giving her a hand-knitted blanket made by my best friend, that is really soft and cuddly and warm, but also easy to breathe through. It also kind of stretches and wiggles with her when she moves around in bed.
****************
I noticed a lot of the folks above me mentioning that their babies had blankets from birth, but they were probably tightly swaddling them also. We swaddled until she outgrew receiving blankets and could wiggle out of them, then went from those to the "bags" like you mentioned, and then to footie pj's and a loose blanket. She has actually slept in footie pj's since we brought her home from the hospital.

She might still be a little young for a blanket. Instead, put her in long underwear and a footed blanket sleeper rather than the bag type. Most of the blanket sleepers have treads on the bottom of the feet, so she should be safe. And you might want to start buying baby gates and childproofing now, because she sounds like she's going to be an early walker!!

I pondered the same thing about giving my now 10 month old a blanket to sleep with. He never liked being swaddled as a newborn, however I felt the need to give him a comfort object...the blanket. Since he was born he's had a blanket in his crib with him...I tuck in all 3 sides to keep in place. Now that he's stronger the blanket doesn't stay in place like it used to. His blankie is his comfort object and I have no objections to that.

My daughter is 4 months old. I put her to sleep in either the sleeper bag or the little footie PJ's. I usually also lay a blanket on her from about her waist down - a light blanket. She hardly ever pulls it up or messes with it. I also usually swaddle her with it, that way she's laying on it and can only pull it up so far.
I think your daughter would be fine w/ a blanket - or just dress her in the footie PJ's so she doesn't get cold.

my daughter is 6 months and has used blankets since birth.
She only likes the real light receiving kind. She still sleeps in a crib in our room, so I'm always checking her to make sure the blankets not on her face.

It's ok. Mylittle girl is 6 months old and I wrap her in a cover. I put the sleepers on her that have the feet in the so if she kicks the cover off she wont get cold but if you are very worrid you can wrap her tightly in the blanket and that way she wont get it to her mouth but she will be fine..

I do use a blanket once in a while for my 8 mos old.
I just use a longer one.
I put half of the blanket underneath him and the other half on top of him. That way even if he turns in bed he is still covered.

Our house was frikkin freezing when i brought my son home...he has had a blanket from day one and he's fine. He's now a fat and happy 6 and a half month old.
If she's strong enough to pull herself up...she's strong enough to pull a blanket off herself.
