First day for anything is always hard. My first day at work was awful. I think my own nervousness didn't help, and I wanted to pack it in, too. But like most things, if you stick at it things do get better. And soon I was one of the crowd.
Give the people with you a chance to get to know you. And don't stop trying to be the friendly person you are. Some folk take some time to warm up to new people, while others are trying to work out if you are a good guy or not. But I would've thought a handful of people, knowing it was your first day, would have tried to make you feel welcome.
Maybe you could have a word with your boss if things don't improve. But I am sure in a week or so you will feel comfortable there and be one of the first people to welcome the next newcomer.
Good luck.
xx

Congratulations on getting your job and no you should not pack it it.
First day is always pants you are scared and wondering what you have done or is it right for you and they who you work with are thinking if you are ok, better at the job than they are so see you as a bit of a threat to start with. So combine the two and that is why you feel the way you do.
Give it a week or so and you will be moaning about Monday morning just like the rest of them.

I sympathise with you - the first few weeks/months of a job can be very difficult. With my current job I can say it probably took me 3-4 MONTHS to feel completely settled in - in fact, thinking about it, I', not sure I even feel that way about it yet, but I do feel a lot better. I too felt like looking for something else after the first month!
Don't make any rash judgements (unless it gets absolutely unbearable). Give people a chance to get to know you and for you to know them. I;m sure you'll feel differently about things in a few months time.

It's totally normal to feel awkward for the first few weeks of starting a job. You're still trying to figure out where everything is and people at work are trying to figure you out. Just smile, make smalltalk and don't take their lack of friendliness personally. They will warm up to you. Offer to help if you see someone who needs help and concentrate on doing your job well. Good luck.

Don't pack the job in on your first day! Just stick at it for the time being. Maybe they just need to get used to you being around, or you just need to wait until one of them talks to you before getting into a conversation with them and finding out their interests.
Whatever it is, good luck!

johnny...no - dont pack the job in. all of us find it hard starting a new job...its not just you. it takes at least 3 months in any job to know it well...so dont you dare give up...or you'll have us on yahoo to deal with!! (lol!!)
in time, your new workmates will get to know you and let you into their 'gang'..remember, established workmates are a bit 'clicky'....but you will fit in fine in the end...dont give up!! good luck!
