I've been hearing Vista is a nightmare and Apple is the way to go now. I've never used one...are they difficult to get used to? I need a basic one...internet, music, photos, thats about it. Do they have Microsoft Word or do I have to buy something separate to have it? Any help would be great!

Neither Macs nor Vista/XP machines come with Word. Word is always extra. However, both have a free word processing program.

That being said, from your post, you should definitely consider getting a Mac. Photos, Music, Video are an absolute DREAM on Mac OS X with iLife - even the most basic of users will find it simple and very FUN to use. And you can create excellent projects in no time at all.

The iBooks out now are a great deal.

BTW - I am not a fanboy of either PCs or Macs - it just happens that your needs as described in your post indicate that a Mac is the way to go for you.

Don't listen to anyone that says Macs are harder to use. They are just as easy as a PC. One big difference is that the taskbar we are so familiar with in the PC world (look down and you see all the applications you are currently running) is not there.

No big deal. You use the dock on a Mac, and it remembers that the program is already open and you just click it and it pops back up. Not like Windows, where if you click it (the program icon) you launch a new instance of the application.

There will be a very short learning curve as you adjust to a Mac, and absolutely keyboard shortcuts (which are a snap to pick up on) will help.

Apple has NEVER been the way to go! Its ads a misleading! I have been in the field for 30 plus years and Apple has never out audioed or out videoed ANY reputable PC on the market. Another common myth is that Macs dont get viruses. The truth of the matter is they dont get as many and there is only one reason. Apple only sells their product to less than 5 percent of the PC buying market. No one writes malware for this puny amount of computers. Their goal is to infect the masses. Apples ads themselves show how stupid their marketing team is and why they have been such a failure for over 20 years. The latest ad, "You can run windows on a Mac now" campaign is geared for idiots! Why would anyone with half a brain buy an overpriced Mac and then install windows if they wanted windows in the first place?

Yea, Vista has problems.

But EVERY large-scale operating system will have similar issues.

There are billions of people on the internet, using millions of different programs and hardware configurations. There is no way that the mere thousands of people that Microsoft has working for them could possibly iron out EVERY bug before the operating system is released.

So they have to release an unfinished Operating system and use the public to help report and fix the bugs.

That is just the way it is.

The good news is that Vista has been out for a little while and is starting to get smoothed out. Though I would still wait another 6 months before buying a computer with Vista on it.

Just buy one with Windows XP.

Apple does not have that problem because they have a fraction of the users that Microsoft has. Not to mention they don't have as many software titles.

Tell us what you intend to use the laptop for, and then maybe we can tell you which one will work for you.

Get a PC, Apple is not the way to go. I have Vista and I have only experienced minor problems. Almost all my programs work normally, the typical PC user Vista will not experience many problems. Most issues are coming from large coorporations which have a huge network and far more things to worry about than a typical user. Most people on here will tell you to stick with XP and claim Vista is incompatible, but they likely don't have Vista and have never used it. I actually like all the new features.

hell no. Apples are harder to navigate, is not logical and definitely missing important keys on the keyboard. Its function control plus something is an annoyingly demented way of operating a computer

depends on what you want to use the laptop for. sure apple is easy, but everyone owns PCs, so softwares are easier to get than apple softwares and PC softwares are a dime a dozen, you can buy pirate ones too.

You can purchase a mac version of MS word. I have found that macs are much easier once you learn the keyboard short cuts (without them it is very very hard to use) but if you have been using windows for a while i would just stick to finding a computer that still runs windows XP. Plus macs are considerably more expensive. All in all i would stick to windows WAY more programs and in my opinion more user friendly...and budget friendly :)

Apple computers, if you dont mind me saying, are for more computer literate (or smart) users.

Windows Vista is more for the everyday user such as yourself.
