Plastic, terra cotta, cast iron or steel?

Some types are not easy to cut. You might need to call a plumber, as to cut the terra cotta and the cast iron it takes a special tool, a chain cutter. If you cannot cut the pipe, take a photograph with a tape measure over the pipe down to the hardware store. A cleanout is a great idea. Get all the parts, and then call a plumber. It should not take more than 1 hour to take care of this.

If you can cut the pipe, the other guys have earned their 10 points.

Good luck.

Cut the pipe on each side of the bad spot and buy either No-hub couplings or Fernco fittings to secure a new piece of pipe into place. Home Centers should carry all the materials you need. I would take the old piece of pipe with you so you get the correct sizes.

Since you called it 'sewer', it must be outside.

Cut the bad section out and replace it with plastic.
They make adapter fittings made by Fernco, Cantex, etc, to fit the plastic to your existing pipe. Clay tile, Orangeburg, Transite, Cast iron, etc.

But use this opportunity to install a cleanout using the proper cleanout two-way tee, or use two combinations installed so they face each other.
