If I were you, and if you like your current computer, I would consider staying with compaq. But I think Hewlett Packard bought Compaq, and since then, it seems H.P. has been more available than Compaq. So you might consider looking at H.P.
Above all, look for all the new features that are available with all the new computers, regardless of make: ultra thin and light widescreen and inexpensive monitors, minimum 512mb of memory for playing movies, minimum 1 gigabyte memory for gaming, make sure it has ethernet so you can have high speed internet, make sure it has the side door on the console for easy access to upgrade your memory, hard drive, etc..., compact disc (CD) and DVD that you can record to, and USB ports. Let's see, what else????
some good brand names to keep an eye on: Compaq, Hewlett Packard, Sony, Dell, and Gateway. They are all highly competive, so they all make a cutting edge product.
Good luck and have fun!!!!

Anything you buy now would be a major step up from a Compcrap Presario. If cost is an issue, go with Dell. If not, get a Mac.
If you are interested in laptops, still go with Dell if cost is an issue. If not check out Toshiba, and of course Mac.
And regarding Byakuya's answer about Dell using cheap parts, no other manufacturers are any different in this regard (and guess who owns Alienware... DELL!). Any computer you buy from a brand name manufacturer is loaded with cheap parts, even custom-to-order PCs. The only way to avoid cheap parts is to buy the parts and build it yourself.
*Oh, and unless you actually enjoy stress-induced headaches, stay away from Windows Vista. Most manufacturers are still offering XP on PCs for a reason - Vista SUCKS. Of course I expect that to change within a year or so.

I used to think Dells were pretty good, but lately they seem to be using cheaper parts.. if you really want a powerhouse, look up Alienware.. you'll pay a lot for it, but they definitely don't skimp on the parts..
