I have heard some people sprinkle black pepper or cayenne pepper on the soil. That may be a deterrant?

Make a cardboard cut-out of a cat as "life size" as you can. (Full body side profile format) On at least one side, Paint Siamese markings or tabby stripes on it. The paint will weather proof it. Glue a marble or other shiny object where the eye would be on the cat. Tape a wooded stick to the back and pop it in the hanging basket BEFORE you find a nest there. No more birds OR squirrels.

You can put an owl decoration close by your plants. This will stop the birds from coming close to your plants. You can purchase the owl at a garden center.

Add some tiger or lion poo if you can get it... scares away the birds. it may also kill your plants if you are not careful. lion dung is very strong and you need to be careful they don't get too much manure, but for keeping away the birdsnests it works, maybe not the birds themselves, but they wont nest in that smell.... be prepared...!! :)The local zoo will sell the stuff.,.. :)

Try chili powder along the edges or rub a jalapeno around the rim of the planter- cheap and effective! Animals hate spicy!
