In my school... it's a requirement to dissect cats... which i think is very cruel since i have two, playful, lively, almost human, cats of my own... so how do i say no? the school would surely fail me.... and the worst part about it....?? we have to catch our own cats! =o

That's ridiculous!

If it goes against your principles, you'll have to refuse to do it.

There's a song in America which says "You have to stand for something or you'll fall for anything."

When I was in school, we had to dissect frogs and baby pigs for biology, both of which came to us already preserved in formaldehyde.

Have your parents meet with the principal of your school or the school board or its equivalent.

This goes beyond cruel and unusual.

Anybody can refuse to do dissection, so you can refuse, get a note from your parents and they wont make you do it.

HOWEVER, dissection is a REALLY good way of learning, you really cant learn anatomy without, not properly anyway. Just dont think of it as a cat, once its opened up it wont look like on anyway.

Also, is that a joke about the catching it thing? Obviously they're not going to make you catch it.

I myself would NEVER be able to do anything like this. I understand the reason behind it in vet school i guess, so i'm not against that, but in HS or college? OMG remember when i was taking biology in my sophomore year in college and we had to dissect a baby pig...well, i won't get into details of how i reacted when i saw that dead poor thing in front of me...but needless to say i dropped my since class and took astronomy instead. Never would i do anything like that to a cat!

If you plan on going into the medical field, I suggest you do the dissection. It will benefit you greatly. In medical school, you'll be dissecting humans (you won't have to kill them, but you will have to dissect them). Besides, a cat is an animal, not a human, and it's not like they're asking you to dissect your own cats.

oh boy. ask your parents for a note to excuse you. and do you really have to catch your own??? that's horrible. if you really want to get out of it, get your parents to help you, and even call the humane society or some other local organization to help you out. dissecting cats is fairly common, but i never heard of the catching them yourself part. anyway, a note from your parents should be good enuf--if your parents will stand up for you.

Nice try, you don't catch your own, they are supplied by Carolina Biological Supply or similar entity.
