A) But why?

Copernicus published "De Revolutionibus Orbium Coelestium" ("on the Revolutions of the Heavenly Spheres") in 1542, dismissing the Ptolemaic System of the Sun turning around the Earth.

Galileo (1564-1642) popularized the Copernican system.

Kepler (1572-1630) brought the first theoretical basis : "Kepler's Laws". Corresponded with Galileo.

Newton (1642-1727) unified Kepler's Laws; showed their common basis.
