Greatest all around 3rd baseman was Mike Schmidt. Brooks Robinson would be considered the second best all around 3rd baseball. However.......in terms of pure defense, the greatest of them all was Clete Boyer of the New York Yankees.

Offensively, I'll take Mike Schmidt, the home run and RBI leader at the position. Defensively, without a doubt it's Brooks Robinson. However, given that Schmidt was not only a world series winning outstanding offensive performer, but was also a standout defensive player in his own right, having won several gold glove awards during his time, I'd take Schmidt as the overall best 3rd baseman in baseball history.

Defensively the choice is hands down Brooks Robinson of the O's with Rolen a distant second. Offensively I'd give it to Mike Schmidt or George Brett. Overall I'd say Schmidt is the best ever, but if A-rod stays at third for the rest of his career he will probably wind up being better. That is if he can ever figure out his footwork at the hot corner...

Greatest 3rd baseman of all time - Brooks Robinson:
Known as "The Human Vacuum Cleaner," Brooks Robinson established a standard of excellence for modern-day third basemen. He played 23 seasons for the Orioles, earning 16 gold glove awards and setting major league career records for games, putouts, assists, chances, double plays and fielding percentage.
A clutch hitter, Robinson totaled 268 career home runs, at one time an American League record for third basemen. He finished his career with a lifetime .267 average and 2848 career hits.
Robinson earned the league's MVP Award in 1964 and the World Series MVP in 1970, when he hit .429 and made a collection of defensive gems.
Quote
"He plays third base like he came down from a higher league."

Have to say Mike Schmidt, 10x gold glove winner, 3 x MVP, 548 career homeruns, 1595 career RBI, 527 slugging%, 23rd all-time in extra base hits. Plus a great guy to talk to about baseball.

Even though Schmidt literally struck out close to a 1,000 more times than Robinson they both had a .267 batting average.
Schimdt's 500+ homeruns gives him the edge of Robinson.
