That's how the DH rule descibes play. But consider: if the DH picks up the glove, a fielder leaves the game -- and his slot in the batting order is empty. Gotta have someone to bat there, since the ex-DH's slot is still occupied by him. Ergo, the pitcher takes the batting slot of the removed fielder.

Because thats the way the rule is written. If the DH is put into the field you lose the DH from your lineup and the pitcher replaces the player that left the game in the lineup.
