When i turn the dial to D (to drain excess water), it keeps turning to the line that means it has stopped, without actually draining the water. Is it going to be a big job or is it something i can fix myself (bearing in mind i'm useless with electricals)

It sounds like a problem with a solenoid, an electrical component. If you are not experienced in electrical repairs, then please do not attempt it yourself.

Is your warranty still in effect? Then it might cost you nothing at all.

If your warranty has expired, call your washing machine retailer or the manufacturer's service department. They may offer a free estimate service. Most appliance repair shops charge for an estimate and will deduct this from the repair if you get it done. Call to find out.

My experience is that with major appliances such as washing machines, parts and labour repair costs start at about $200.00. Call a few places with your symptoms and try to get a free estimate.

Alternatively, you could ask a friend, an acquaintance or a relative who is experienced with electrical appliances to look at it. I have repaired my own very inexpensively because most of the repair cost is in the labour.

Depending on the age of your washing machine, it may be better to replace it rather than spend an small fortune to repair it. Good used machines are often available in the classified section for less money than the cost of a professional repair. New machines can sometimes be very economical. Some places sell scratched or dented machines at huge discounts. Just make sure they come with a warranty.

Could be the pump failed or it could be a control glitch. The pump should be an easy replacement. You will need to troubleshoot it to see if the pump runs or is dead.
