Cranberry Juice..and many other things...

I used to get them all the time. The cranberry suggestions are great, and can be used daily since it's extracts from a natural food source. If you're like me, you'd rather put up with the pain than to drink that stuff--To me it tastes so bitter and by using the cranberry/other fruit combos it dilutes the cranberry juice and diminishes its effectiveness. The cranberry tablets would work well for you if you feel the same about the juice.

However, using the cranberry tablets or juices, usually take a couple days for you to notice any measurable improvement. So, I would suggest the over the counter medication called Cystex. It contains a medication that was once by prescription only called Methanamine. This medication coats the bladder and urinary walls and prevents the bacteria that causes the infections from adhering in the urinary tract or bladder, and also makes it so what bacteria is already there, cannot remain. The bacteria is made to release and allows it to be washed out easily and quickly. When I tried it the first time, I had very noticable relief in 6 hours, and any noticable sign of it was gone in 24 hours.

What I would do is get the Cystex to clear up the existing infection, and then continue on, as the other answerer suggested, with the cranberry tablets on a daily basis for prevention, which can be found at any pharmacy or health food store. Ask your pharmacist about brands on the cranberry tabs... some of them have higher concentration of cranberry extract and will more effective

Your best option is prevention. Stay away from alcohol and caffeine, since they'll dehydrate you - the less frequently you go, the more bacteria can build up. (I know it's lame to not be able to have a beer or a coffee... but UTIs are even worse!) That's also why you should drink plenty of water - try getting a big water bottle and shoot for having to fill it three times in the day. Every day!

Also, cranberry extract is heaven-sent! I take 2 tablets every day at night, and the only time I get UTIs anymore is when I run out and don't refill - that teaches me! Some of them even come with vitamins C & E, which helps keep your immune system strong enough to fight the infection.

Remember to keep your 'lower half' covered with non-restricting, cotton-based undies and pants. If you can at all avoid wearing pantyhose, do it! Even thongs can be rough for some people. You've gotta breathe down there to prevent a damp, warm environment... and that's what bacteria loves!

I don't know if you're sexually active, but if you are, make sure you go the the bathroom immediately after sex. This forces any bacteria that might have been forced up your urinary tract out. I know it's not sexy to hop out of bed right afterwards - but UTIs aren't very sexy either!

To continue the grossness, when you go the the bathroom... wipe front to back. The bacteria that causes UTIs can be found in your feces, so you don't want to wipe that forwards. (Sorry to be graphic, but it's true.)

And basically: stay hydrated, well-rested, take your vitamins, be good to you. Keep that immune system supported!

cranberry juice WITHOUT SUGAR. Northland is the best brand juice i have found that doesnt have any added sugar. It would also make things less complicated if you do not have sexual intercorse or use tampons until a week after its gone. Just to be sure because it could still be there you just dont feel it and it can come back worse.

caught early enough, alka seltzer will handle a uti (urinary tract infection). two tabs in six ounces of water every four hours for 24 hours. There are also otc tabs you can get that will eliminate your symptoms for a time, they won't cure a uti, and they will turn your urine orange, but you won't have the painful urination. Ask the pharmacist. I can't remember the name of the otc product just now.

The ONLY reliable method of UTI recovery is antibiotics. This is just a fact of life. If you don't get it treated with proper medications ASAP, it can spread through your ureters and into your kidneys and cause permanent damage. Don't mess around with it.
