The National league is referred to as the "seniors", and the AL as the Juniors. Why?

Because the NL has been around longer. The NL started officially in 1876, the AL in 1901. When the AL became a major league, it was perceived as a breath of fresh air to baseball. The NL had become very violent in the 1890s and the AL was a more cleaned-up, fan-friendly version of baseball.
