Out of the crusades came trade. The average knight in Europe had never seen Persian rugs, tasted the cuisine or the spices, or felt silk before he went on crusade. Those who survived brought back a couple of things and told folks at home about them. The foot soldiers did more. A market for these items developed in France and Britain so the trade developed.

Because the Middle East was undependable on trade, Portugal developed better navigation and made it around Africa and up to the Indies. Because Spain didn't want to be left behind, they were willing to finance a foolish explorer who wanted to sail to the west and around the world.

It was the riches of the middle east and orient which fueled exploration and those riches were relatively unknown to the common man until the crusades.
