That all sounds just fine. And who knows, in 30 or 40 years it might become a reality. Halle Berry may no longer feel that she needs to say "my people" at an awards show. Applications may no longer ask what color your skin is. Jesse Jackson will no longer shake down companies for imaginary infractions. It will take a concerted effort to make this happen.

* English as the official language of the United States?

No. America does not need an official language. Freedom means speaking whatever language you feel like.

* No more "african american" or "asian american", just American?

Why stop there? why not just call everyone "Earthmen" and abolish the term American? Or maybe we should learn to be proud of our individual heritages, and how being an American lets us celebrate them, without succumbing to base nationalism?

* No more black parades, mexican parades, just American parades?

See above. Why is pride in heritage (except your American heritage) a bad thing?

* Adapt to the AMERICAN way of life? Not pushing your way of life?

Exactly! We should let the mexicans, asians, and blacks live the way they want to, without us "regular folk" telling them how to live. If they want to speak Spanish to each other and march in Mexican heritage parades, they should be free to do so, without us pushing our way of life on them and making them adhere to our standards. That is the American way.

The fundamental greatness of America is Freedom. I may disagree with what you say, but I will defend to death your right to say it. When you start defining America for other people, you are undermining the very foundation of American greatness.

All of the above.

Though that is an idealized train of thought, the United States of America is (at the risk of sounding like an after school special) a melting pot. Without disctinct cultural differences, our culture wouldn't be what it is today. Everything we have (as far as music, food, whatever) is a product of multi-culturalism. Don't believe me? Example: Chef Boyardee. Toyota... Whatever. I DON'T think we should hold certain races above others by having "parades". And I don't think we should call blacks "African Americans" because some of them weren't even born in Africa. They were born here, so they are "americans". Nothing more.

I agree with the English as the official language but I don't think everybody knows what that actually means. It means the Government is not going to print eight different languages to accomodate everybody. If you are in this country you should learn english. Does that mean you can't speak any other language? NO. If I wanted to live in France I would expect to learn French in order to deal with everyday life.

I'm not crazy about the hyphenated Americans. All that does is divide us. Your allegiance should be to your home country. That being said, it doesn't mean you give up your cultural heritage.

What a concept! Actually, there are a lot of asian- americans in America, but very few african- americans. In order to be a hyphenated nationality one has to have been born in the country to the left of the hyphen and emmigrate to the one on the right. Most blacks don't qualify. Sorry, folks, that's just the way it is in reality.

these fraises are so typical...of the ignorant way of thinking that has started to dominate society... just because at the begining of the forming of this country people happened to speak english does not make it the "official" language of this country so you wanna speak english do it.....but don't expect everyone else to have to speak english or to adapt to the way of life that the very loud minority happens to believe is the "american" way of life....back again to those basic freedoms of human existence freedom of speech ...as far as I can remember this particular freedom is not restricted by language....and besides if you really want to get technical the ignorant group of people who claim to be "american" are foreign any way so if a person is a productive, and law abiding tax paying citizen what the heck do you care what language they speak or if they want to celebrate their heritage or if they want to act in a different way than "americans" besides if we keep going the way we are this country is going to have a different majority ..and then it is you lazy american people that will have to change in order to be considered "american"

Yes.... That is my dream.. That is why I am a Traditional Conservative who longs for one nation were everyone wants to be an American and support American.... Not a nation where people come and expect to be supported and to carve out a niche community based on the fundamentals of the country they came from.

America is a country of immigrants and of hundreds of different cultures. Who are you to say which culture should dominate? What are you going to do to people who identify with a different culture, or who don't speak English, are they going to be arrested - cause that sounds like extremist nationalism to me. And can you define the American way of life - and if you can I bet you it'll be different with just about everyone you ask.

Most importantly, where does native american culture and language fit into all of this - they were there first and that should be respected.

No.

Mainly because of point #3. No more "black parades" or "mexican {sic} parades" means no more Irish parades on St. Patricks day. Means no more German festival or Italian festival or Greek festival.

I enjoy my cultural melting pot, thank you very much. The fondue it cooks up is delicious.

NO WAY

I love diversity.

Next you will say hotdogs only no corned beef no pastrami.

As for English they voted on that in the first Continental Congress. American simply forgot their history.
