P.D. James writes excellent English mystery/suspense novels.
You can't go wrong with the good old Agatha Christie stuff, if you haven't read those. Daphne DuMaurier is excellent, as well.
For somewhat lighter fare, try Mary Stewart.
If you want to laugh, pick up some of Jasper Fforde's "Thursday Next" series.
( I have assumed you mean "British" when you say "English", as opposed to just meaning "written in English"--if you DID mean "in the English language", here are some more favorites:
James Lee Burke (all either set in Louisiana or in the American West---excellent)
Robert B. Parker---Spenser novels, Jesse Stone novels
Sue Grafton's alphabet series
Jeffrey Deaver's Lincoln Rhyme series)

James Patterson is a good recommendation.
I would also suggest David Baldacci's Last Man Standing, Split second, The Camel Club, Hours Game etc.

I love anything by James Patterson or Patricia Cornwell. A few I've read lately are At Risk by Patricia Cornwell, Judge and Jury by James Patterson, Count Down by Iris Johansen, and Hide by Lisa Gardner. Hope you enjoy these.
