So my socks end up like the TV show LOST!

Yes there is. It is caused by the low humidity and static build up of disimilar materials spinning in concentric circles. A gateway of sorts is opened between alternate realities and thwoop a sock or two are gone! Now, you realize that nature, no matter what plane it is on requires balance. That means as your sock leaves this reality, an equal amount of matter must transfer in. Check under your couch (the typical entry point) for collections of parallel world material, sometimes known as dust bunnies. Now you know where socks go and where dust bunnies come from.

They often get sent down the piping that's connected to the dryer. That's what happened in my case. A couple of pairs of my socks ended up in some town in New Hampshire.
