The Holocaust was used to round up anyone who did not meet the Nazi criteria for a pure race. Jews were targeted because they did not assimiliate into the German culture and they had money and were a distinctly different racial group. Gypsies, blacks, homosexuals and others were also exterminated.
You can read about the Holocaust and what was done to prisoners elsewhere. Lots of information out there from survivors.
The reason it took so long for the US to find out what was going on is because it took the GERMANS quite a while to figure out what was going on. They knew the Jews were being sent to work camps or relocation camps. They didn't know they were being killed until sometime later. When word sifted through from soldiers who had worked at the camps, people didn't want to believe it. Gradually, it became known that the work camps were death camps, but the true horror of them wasn't revealed until the camps were liberated.

It's not that it took that long for the U.S. to find out what was going on...we didn't know everything until after the war, but there was definetly a good idea of what was happening. We didn't enter the war until it was necessary for our national security and after we were asked for help by England. At that point, without intervention, Hitler could have taken over much more and become unstopable.
Unfortunetly, every horrible thing imaginable happened. If you want to learn, there are many good movies and books. But if you don't know much about it, I would be careful, it can be pretty graphic if you are not expecting it. Maybe see if there is a holocaust museum in your area...

An extreme right wing political party gained power in Germany and persecuted minorities, partly for economic gain, confiscating property and businesses, partly as terrorist tactics to cow the rest of the population.
People from the minorities and anyone who stood up to the regime were put into prison camps, worked or starved to death or murdered in gas chambers to clear space.
The US knew what was going on almost from the beginning although they did not appreciate the extent of the atrocities.
There has been a reluctance of the US government to get involved in large wars and it has been noted in Europe that in both world wars the US troops arrived a number of years after other countries had been involved.

The Germans decided to create a supirior race and the Jews, Gypsies and homosexuals were thought to be unworthy. The Nazis gathered them together in several camps accross Germany and eastern Europe. They were then gassed in chambers, their remains then burnt or burried.
There was a big cover up of what went on, most of the time even the prisioners did not know what was happening to the others.
