It depends on the line of work, environment of the office, and location of the United States (no joke).

I used to live in the mountain west where life is pretty well laid back. You have your snowboarders/skiiers as well as mountain climbers and back-packers. It's a pretty "granola" lifestyle and it's not unusual to see men wearing long hair and to have it pulled back in a pony tail in the office.
However, I've since moved from the mountain west to the DC area. This place is a yuppie haven. You'd be hard pressed to find any office that wouldn't frown on that look. However, if you had a blue collar position, chances are it would be better accepted.
This is why I am saying it depends on the situation and the location.
To find out if wearing a pony tail at work is okay in your locale and office, look around your office. What is the standard attire? Also, you'd need to clear it with your supervisor before attempting to wear a pony tail.
I hope this has helped somewhat.
Good luck.

It all depends on the workplace. You must know the limits of the place where you work. Where I used to work, the guys had long braids, long hair flowing freely and that was okay along with the ponytails and short hair. That was a workplace that respected the individual. But would it be okay in a bank? Think not.

I guess it would be O.K. if you worked in a warehouse, drove a truck, worked a landscaping job or did construction work. In other words, if you had a blue collar job that didn't require you to wear a shirt and tie. Ponytails are casual looking and not professional looking for an office. You don't state how old you are but if you are over 30, it might be time to consider cutting that ponytail off and maybe donating your hair to Locks of Love or another similar organization that makes wigs for for cancer patients.

Yes and no, maybe and perhaps. What kind of job is "work?" Can the ponytail be tucked under a cap? What is the type of work? Are there any safety hazzards present? This is not the appropriate place to ask this kind of question.

LOL. i agree, a man should not have a pony tail. Also if you do, it depends on your job, your boss, your co workers etc. It can also tie into race, because i remember reading an article where they were researching and found that it was ok for whites to have ponytails and etc, but bosses found it unacceptable for their black employees to have unorthodox hairstyles. I don't get it? So it really does depend on who your boss is and what your job is.

My personal opinion, if you are at a job where you have to look professional, and how you present yourself to others really matter i would say no.

It depends on his job. I've known mechanics and truck drivers with pony tails or bob-things (think Mel Gibson in The Patriot), but very few jobs where men deal face-to-face with the public or with other businesses will allow or encourage men to have a ponytail.

Are u kidding? I've seen everything from eyebrow piercing to nose piercing to etc...Get my drift, huh? I love a man with a ponytail. As long as he keeps it clean and pulled back away from his face, I can't imagine a ponytail getting in the way with anybodys work. Other than the girls swooning over it.

Yes, *all* LINUX support staff have a ponytail. We need them at work. Ban ponytails and a lot of computer systems will stop working. Ha.

Your hair is just that, your hair and you have a right to grow a pony tail if you like. In an industrial or food environment, you will probably have to have a hair net so you don't get it caught in anything, same as a women with a pony tail. You may find it is not accepted in some professional settings, but people are more tolerant than they used to be. If you want one, wear it.

Sure, as long as the boss allows it and it falls within company guidelines.
Not a good idea for some work situations though. Cut it if you work with machinery, or in food services.

But really, how many SUCCESSFUL men do you see wearing a pony tail? Career-wise, pony-tails are never a wise move.
