try lowering the crutches a little bit. I injured my knee last week and have been on crutches all week. They set the crutches to tall for me and my arms have been sore all week. Finally I realized that I could adjust the height and I lowered them and it's alot better. It forces you to use the weight on your hands and not your arms, which is what is making us sore. Tell your daughter that I "feel her pain"! Lol! Can't wait until we are walking again. You don't realize how important our legs are until we lose the use of them.... Also, something else you might try is to wrap towels around them. Someone suggested that to me but I haven't done it yet. Comfort is more important than how ridiculous they might look anyways so don't worry about it. If someone don't like it they can just turn their heads the other way! :)

Its true...if her armpits hurt then she is using the crutches incorrectly. There should be approx space for 2 fingers in between the tops of the crutches and her armpits. If she places too much weight for too long a period of time into her armpits she can cause damage to her brachial plexus (network of nerves that control the arms). She should have the crutches properly fitted for her by a physical therapist. The height adjustments on the crutches rarely match with the person's height using them.

Wrap cloth around the top to increase the surface area. Unfortunately, it will look ridiculous.

The best thing is to just keep using them. Rest for one day- don't use them at all. This will rest both your daughter's leg and her armpits. As she uses them the next day, she should notice less pain and after a week or so, none at all.

If your duaghter is leaning on her crutches with her armpits she is not using them right and they are too big for her. She should be using her arms to carry herself, not leaning on her armpits. She could be causing damage to her glands by doing this, break her fromm that habit as soon as possible!!!

Try washclothes safety pinned to the handholds of the crutches to help her hands be more comfortable and avoid them getting sweaty and gross. The washclothes can be washed whenever they need to be and they are absorbant and soft and a huge help!

Good luck, hope she recovers quickly!!!

First off how old is your daughter?

I personally would use hand towels as a cushion.
