You need an impact driver. Your local parts store probably carries them.

You need a screw extractor. The tip kinda likes a fat, short drill bit, but without a long set of threads. They usually have a hex shaped end to insert into either a drill or a hand driver that accepts different types of heads. The sharp end cuts into the stripped out screw and gets grip so that the screw will come out. When you are using one, go slow!

They are fairly cheap and usually come in a set of three different sizes. You can find them at Home Depot, Lowes or probably even Wal-Mart.

Sears may have a tool set for removing stripped screws--They've run ads on TV for them...not sure if it's for phillips head though. Other choices are to run a file or hacksaw over the screw head if possible to make a groove and then remove the screw with a standard screwdriver....drill out the screw head but be careful to leave enough screw threads to remove with a vicegrip...and sometimes, if you dip the head of the screwdriver in toothpaste or rubbing compound, the grit in those products will give you a better grip in the slots and with enough pressure you can turn it.
Good luck, Paul

It just MAY be that the screw head requires a #2 tip, and you are using a #1 tip, which will often ruin the screw. Try using a #2 and press firmly while turning the driver. It just may have enough material left there to turn it. Wouldn't hurt to squirt a little penitrating oil or WD-40 in there also.

depending on where the screw is located and how tight it really is . my first attempt is to always cut a slot in it and try to remove with a big flat screw driver. If it's holding 2 pieces together alot of times I'll cut the head off and remove the top part lots of times i can then remove the shank of the screw with pliers but sometimes I have had to weld a nut on them and remove with a wrench. they also make a product you can get at most autoparts that rebuilds the screw head.
