Can anyone suggest a few good books that are centered around or occure in a medieval setting? Fiction or non, it doesn't matter. I have read the Wheel of Time series and loved it and have read Timeline, which is my current favorite. Anything along those lines would be great!

The search engines on online book store sites are really no help.

Thanks guys!!

If you're looking for true Medieval literature, you have to read stuff that was written in the Middle Ages. Have you read Chaucer or Boccaccio?

The Canterbury Tales by Geoffrey Chaucer is a prime example of Medieval literature. Ideally, you should read it in the original Middle English but modern English translations are available. Check out the following link for the full text.

Giovanni Boccaccio's "The Decameron" is another excellent example of medieval literature. It is set in the time of the plague in Europe. It is told over a period of ten days with a different narrator each day. Here is a link.

Look into Bernard Cornwell, he's an historical fiction novelist. I know he has one series based on the time period of Alfred the Great of England. He also has another based loosely on King Arthur. Another he sets during the Hundred Years' War, concerning a hired archer or mercenary. They're all great reads.

The novels "The Name of the Rose" and "Baudolino" by Umberto Eco are both historical fiction in the middle ages with a lot of historical details.

You must read Chaucer. I would highly recommend Sir Gawain & the Green Knight. Mists of Avalon is quite good. Really, do a google or amazon search of Arthurian Literature, that will be a nice starting block.

If you are into crime thrillers and mysteries try books by Ellis Peters (Brother Cadfael) or Paul Doherty (Brother Athelstan and Hugh Corbett).
