Your fish is having problems defecating (pooping). I would suggest defrosting a pea and taking the skin off and feeding this to him. It will act as a laxative and help your fish pass it. This is commonly caused by not having a varied diet. I suggest feeding several types of food a week instead of just one type of food such as flake. Good Luck!

I'd agree with "poop" depending on the point of origin, but the white color is bothersome. This is usually a sign of an internal infection unless you're feeding your fish white colored food. It's also possible that this is reabsorbed eggs, if the fish is a female, but this usually is a bit "lumpy" or "zigzag" in shape.
If this doesn't seem to be eggs, I'd suggest treating with a broad-spectrum antibiotic like Furanace.
NOTE: Camallanus are red in color and only about 1-1/2" long.

It sounded like poo until you said it gets longer everyday. Are there things in the tank the fish can rub up against? Like gravel chunks on the bottom or castles or big rocks in the tank?
If you just have it in a bowl with an aerator it may not be able to clean itself.

it really is "filamentous algae". i have had it numerous circumstances in my tank and it really is expectable in a tank it really is were given fish in it. do not do any scrubbing or washing. merely get your self a sparkling toothbrush and wind the strands round it. Get an algae scrubber and do the glass and also you need to be almost as good as new. The algae truly helps get rid of the fish's waste, so its no longer risky or some thing! good success!

It could be a parasite of some sort. How many fish are in this aquarium, and are there any other symptoms on any of the other fish?

It might just be poo that hasn't broken off yet. Have you changed your type of fish food lately?

It is your fishes elimination system. It's POOP. Please dont try to pull it off for him, it will drop off naturally. Sometimes it will be gray in color or greenish. Don't worry. You just skim it out of the tank when he is done. Nana

Its a parasite, no doubt about it.. never mind the comment about poop. It could be Camallanus. Ask your local pet shop for maracin or maracide or another type of dewormer. These nematodes can be hazardous to the fish's health not to mention contageous.

Maybe it's his poo. Usually it just drops off though. I think he needs a little help.
