Open the Word document
click File
cl Save As
at the top, make note of where it will be saved
on the bottom, filename: give it a new name or it will overwrite the existing file
on the bottom, filetype: click the down arrow and select txt or text.
Done!

A document and XML are not even close to the same thing...apples and oranges. If you're writing XML code in a document, then copy and paste it out of there and into a text editor like Notepad. Or, better yet, an XML editor. Doing code in Word is just asking for trouble.
To save as a .txt file, the easiest way is to copy the text, open Notepad, and paste it in. That'll guarantee a nice clean conversion.

Assuming your coding syntax is correct simply right click on the .doc file you want to use and change the extension from .doc to .xml.
