Well, I brought my laptop into school, and I noticed that they had a wireless network set up. I wanted to get onto it, but I couldn't figure out how to do it, unless I assigned myself the IP of the computer in the back of one of my teacher's rooms.

When I went home and told my dad how cool it was, he said that I probably shouldn't do it, because it's illegal.

I'm not sure if I believe him, because they clearly have the network set up for something, right?

Without the network administrators permission it is illegal.
In the UK it comes under the Computer misuse act other countries all have similar laws. It is classified as theft. You may find that the School network admin has left it open and will give you permission.

Even if you can use the teacher's IP, there is still more than likely going to be a password to get on their network. I don't think it's illegal so much as them sending you to jail, but the school may decide to suspend you for tapping into their network. If your school has a good technology team, they can use the mac address to pinpoint the exact computer that is accessing the network, and they will know every site you went to while on their network. Best not chance it. And you are right the network is set up there for something... it's there for educational purposes.

Using a computer resource without the permission of the owner is illegal. That includes hacking into the school's wifi.

The network isn't open, so they cannot be said under any view to be inviting you to use the network can they?

Michelle is partly misinformed. hacking != cracking a million. Tapping ability connecting. 2. somebody has linked on your on the spot community. 3. maximum suitable case scenario there are not any issues or hardship in any respect. in the event that they receive dissimilar stuff (television shows, video clips, and so on.) you need to word that your community is slow. Worst case scenario is they thieve your identity by way of monitoring the usernames and passwords you employ to get right of entry to your on line banking money owed or the different very own preparation. 4. often circumstances certainly one of those habit is going left out till some thing seems out of place or your community seems to be performing surprisingly. e.g. slow cyber web connections, desktops having hardship doing well-known projects, and so on. Michelle is stable regardless of the indisputable fact that for the duration of indicating which you will see some thing is erroneous as quickly as desktops commence performing surprisingly because of the fact of undercover agent ware or unsolicited mail bots that have been put in on your workstation. yet those issues are probable led to by way of not having abode windows patched authentic and are not an instantaneous attack on your community (distinctly if it rather is a house community). desktops get contaminated in basic terms by way of being on the information superhighway and not being patched.

If there is a password on the network, you shouldn't do it. They might have it installed for the students to use. Ask your teacher or principal if it is for students to use. That way you know for sure.

If all you need to do is connect to a specfic IP, no, that's not considered illegal. But ask your network administrator first anyway.

If you were able to get on the network than that is not violating any rules. Hell they transmitted the signal there is no law saying you can't receive it.
