Go with the dell. Will you be putting movies on the hard drive? In which case, you MAY want to look at an upgrade on how much space you have because they obviously take a lot of room, but it isn't necessary. And yeah, get XP. Tried Vista and hated Microsoft even more. It looks really sexy, but other than that, I don't really like it. I don't like having to have a high end computer for the sake of an operating system.

Dell is Nice But The Compaq Has little More Hard Drive Space That is the Only Different really the Video is nicer on the Dell Sempron than the Compaq with the Intel Celeron

So with Dell Better Video Less HD Space or
Compaq Little more HD Space Intel Intergraded Graphics

Vista is Ok Need Better Driver Support

decide for the Compaq! i think of they are oftentimes greater effective. Dell's are ok, yet are not made with the proper areas (like the Sony batteries that gentle on hearth). additionally, my adventure with Compaq's has been stable. honestly, i might choose an HP over a Compaq, yet the two are great on condition that Compaq became into offered via HP, however the only reason it is nonetheless referred to as Compaq is by using the fact HP would not have the rights to alter it or something. wish this helps. Oh...do not flow Gateway....undesirable.

Always go for the Dell, it will be far more reliable, and if under warranty, Dell tech support is amazing. I would never see any reason to get a Compaq, unless it were free !

Oh yes and as for Vista, it's fine, in fact I love it. However.. it does take a decent computer to run it smoothly, I definitely wouldnt try running it with 512MB RAM and integrated graphics. If you can afford a mid-to-high end PC, then go with Vista. If not, Vista will be majorly handicapped, in which case, stick with XP (but i would still recommend upgrading t 1GB of RAM)

I would go with Dell. At the school I went to, we had both Compaq and Dell laptops. The Compaqs needed repair constantly, meaning even though the inital price was cheaper, the cost of repair made it more expensive than Dell. Also, it's just plain annoying to waste time getting a laptop repaired when you need it for school assignments!

I would go with the Dell, I never cared for Compaq. I would definitely request Windows XP and NOT Vista.
