When I was in school, one of the first things you were taught when you learned how to read was how to use the library. Since this is the computer age, I was wondering how come students are not taught how to search the net for information and how to find resource material on the web.

Kodos to P.M. for effort. I can understand some of the dingy questions now. A better method is needed. like on-line monitoring to be sure the students are doing what is requested of them.

Rneem1954 - only those students that take the course are taught unless it is made mandatory for all, the goal is not met.

I do, and have for several years now.
The problem isn't students not being taught, but students not paying attention to what is taught. I have ensured that my students have access to, and know about research engines, and other resources that are available on line through the school and public library.
I have told them what I expect to be done in terms of on line research, and given them worksheets and various aides to keep them on track.
When they submit their essays and projects, they almost entirely ignore everything I have told them and taught them. Most students, given the opportunity, immediately visit facebook or youtube or start an internet chat as soon as they are allowed on computer. To them, the internet is a place for socialization and recreation; maybe 2 students in a class do research on line properly.
Don't assume that all teachers, schools or jursidictions don't teach this skill just beacuse the students don't know how. Lot's of teachers, schools and jurisdiction attempt to teach the rudiments of grammar and spelling, too, but given the efforts exhibited here it would appear we do not....and that is deceptive.

Because teachers don't know how to do it!
I saw a question here from an undergrauate working on a paper assignment and the answers here said:
5th Graders know more than that, what the heck are your teachers talking about, they are 20 years behind the times!
True
The average 12 year old knows more about the internet than most college professors. In a PRATICAL sense, I mean!
12 year olds are putting up You Tube stuff, most College professors can't work a Camcorder, let alone import into Movie Maker and render a WMV file to upload to You Tube!
That's known as UNSCHOOLING in action!
Once upon a time I was 35 and looking at 9 year olds at Radio Shack typing on the TRS80 and I said to myself
GOD, I'm IMPOTENT!

It must be the school system you are in. Ours teaches Library and Computer Science. Part of English class you have to do a research paper using both the Internet and the Library . You have to give sources. It helped my kids a lot.
We are a very small school and they even start in the younger grades( kindergarden up) using both library and computer.

Schools themselves don't know. Look how long it took schools to recognize the need for Driver's Education. Once they perceive the NEED, then they will go about devising the curriculum.
If you feel that your school needs it, contact the office of the Superintendent and find out how to petition for a new curricula.

using desktops in coaching arithmetic is great if used as a gadget and merely one ingredient of the ordinary training and discovering technique. besides the undeniable fact that it can't and should not replace a pragmatic arithmetic instructor. i know, via fact I certainly have tutored math for 5 years and function seen the shortcoming of desktops in coaching math. they'd be useful in determining the place a student is vulnerable and desires help, yet in basic terms a instructor can safely furnish that help.
