Do you think R. Gere should have known not to act like a Westerner in a S. Asian country such as India where they don't even hold hands in public??

Isn't there a certain degree of knowledge that needs to be pertained about the custom and culture of a country before you visit there? I'm not saying I agree with the extreme reaction by Indians, but I would have expected some outrage at his behavior. I'm American born, and I still think it was inappropriate behavior for a married man to be kissing all over another woman.

(There are tourist guidebooks widely available. I'm sure Gere had one. All guides will till you that public displays of affection are highly shunned in S. Asian countries.)

In what country would it have been appropriate for him to treat her like that?

It was obvious that she was uncomfortable with his attempt to kiss her, and the fact that he kept trying and made such a fool of himself makes the country in which it took place irrelevant.

As for respecting a country's culture and tradtions, yes, it would have been a good idea to learn a little about your hosts.

I think the reaction to it was way overblown. He definitely should have realized that India is a lot more conservative about public displays of affection than the US, but still. It is understandable that he might think Bollywood would be a little looser, more liberal, than Indian society in general. And Shilpa doesn't really even care. It's everyone else. He acted ignorantly, but he doesn't quite deserve to be burned in effigy.

I don't think about the Gere/India situation at all, ever. It's totally stupid, and India as a country should have better things to worry about that this stupid stuff. Who cares?!

The population of India is 1,080,264,388 (July 2005). Obviously, sex isn't new to them and they're hypocrites for having a meltdown because a star kisses another star.

god knows you wouldn't want to kiss a legal aged female over there but it is ok to sell your children to a prostitute ring.

female children are forced to be sex slaves by sicko's over there so until they stop that madness they have absolutely nothing to say
